Ayurveda is the oldest surviving complete medical system. Ayurveda has been practised in India for more than 5000 years.
There are eight types of treatment in Ayurveda. They are as follows:
1. Kayachikitsa (Internal medicine)
2. Baala chikitsa (Pediatrics)
3. Graha chikitsa (Demonology)
4. Urdhvanga Chikitsa (Diseases of head & neck)
5. Shalya chikitsa (Surgery)
6. Visha chikitsa (Toxicology or Snake Treatment)
7. Jara chikitsa (Rejuvenation)
8. Vrsha chikitsa (Aphrodisiac therapy)
One of the eight types of Ayurvedic treatment that has gained much prominence in India is Toxicology (Vishachikilsa).Toxicology is a very different branch, when we consider the other branches of Ayurveda. The death of many people from snake bite is one reason for the reputation of snake treatment in India. It is seen that the number of snake bite victims have increased and many die even after taking treatment to counter the effect of the snake poison. The ignorance of the people regarding the correct method of treatment in Toxicology, lack of first aid and delay in providing the treatment has resulted in the death of many victims.
